Yes, you are correct that one principle that we believe is to Honor and Sustain the Law. However, some people understand how good government will and should work and all of them know that government should never regulate personal and private property. So, these people who know how government should work to protect the right to property will try to support those measures to use government to protect private property. Not all taxes is theft. To other forms of taxation, it is theft. We can find doctrine all over the place that suggest that governments can use the police force and take property from one person even thou he didn't do anything wrong. The Church has never endorsed socialist principles, never has, and never will. The author of that book was comparing systems of welfare from government vs the Church. Just because it was approved of my the twelve but written by someone not of the twelve does not mean that the twelve suddenly support socialism and any of its principles. In fact, the book wasn't trying to convey that at all but just comparing systems. If you read that entire book, later the author actually admitted what the intent of writing was. "he wasn't saying that the twelve support socialism".

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2192924352181167945.post-48502349575609616572021-09-01T20:55:23.478-07:002021-09-01T20:55:23.478-07:00>But dismissing this because they are the offic...>But dismissing this because they are the official authors would be like dismissing a Sunday School manual (or any other approved material) because it was actually written by the General Sunday School leaders.

That actually is a pretty good reason for questioning the manuals and many of them have been shown to have historical errors and to take scriptures and historical events out of context. Further, we know that manuals are not "signed off" by the First Presidency or the Twelve in any direct sense.

On the other hand, we do have the direct comments of church leaders on the topic of Socialism from just a few years (1942) during General Conference. Go read President J. Reuben Clarke's comments on the Law of Consecration, private property, the United Order, and Socialism starting on page 56. They're totally different from what you have produced here.

https://ia800702.us.archive.org/24/items/conferencereport1942sa/conferencereport1942sa.pdf

Also, you wouldn't have to make a disclaimer saying General Authorities didn't actually teach these things if you hadn't so dishonestly slapped the quote right up next to Heber J. Grant. You essentially lied and got caught doing it.Willhttp://thelatterdayliberator.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2192924352181167945.post-51591252864794175602021-04-28T20:18:34.791-07:002021-04-28T20:18:34.791-07:00You voted for biden....u support socialism...how d...You voted for biden....u support socialism...how do u justify answering no to question #7 of the temple interview? We are not a socialist country, but the government does provide a number of things we use every day: streets, and highways, medical care for the indigent, regulations (air traffic, food, car safety, radio and TV stations, etc.), free education K-12, fire and police, etc., etc. Government does NOT own the means of production or private property. The quotes given did not advocate that. Therefore, the church never advocated socialism. The church did advocate more government services. The fine line between what government should and shouldn't do will be debated ad nauseam. I reject the notion that the church advocated socialism. I am not a right winger. I voted for President Biden, but I do not advocate socialism.Rocky Roadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04980833870144812664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2192924352181167945.post-5376243990252547712021-01-24T12:52:15.589-08:002021-01-24T12:52:15.589-08:00Wow, just stop. Article of Faith 12: “We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.“ if the law is a certain tax system, anyone who would stand opposed to that tax would be in opposition to this basic defining creed of our faith. See also Luke 20:25 and Elder Oaks interpretation of this scripture in his Oct 2020 General Conference talk “Love your Enemies.” We are forced to pay taxes in the same way that we are forced to obey, honor, and sustain any other law. As a middle class member, I already give more than just tithing to the church every month to help those less fortunate than I. I have faith that our church gets the donations to the right people who need it and not embezzle or waste it. People opposed to a socialist government don't trust their politicians to do that same. Our church also promotes self-sufficiency and hard work which minimizes freeloaders receiving benefits. If the church went back to the United Order I would have no problem with that but I will fight against my country going socialist.
